Halloween Verse: Don’t Look in the Mirror
written by Regina Rodríguez-Martin
October 31, 2021

I wrote this for the Halloween party I had last night where we swapped spooky stories and Halloween jokes. I wanted to create verse that scans perfectly because I get annoyed with all verse that doesn’t! Also, this poem expresses the scariest part of life I can think of.

Don’t Look in the Mirror

Our parents make us so annoyed

We vow to grow up and avoid

Stupidity we saw them do.

We know our choices will be new.

But everyone who’s seen the face

Of their own parent can’t erase

The evidence that slowly shows

Dysfunction doesn’t die, but grows.
