Chicana on the Edge

Chinatowns Everywhere Need Us
written by Regina Rodríguez-Martin

Ignorant Americans everywhere are avoiding their local Chinese restaurants, shops and neighborhoods because they’re afraid of the coronavirus. In Chicago, Chinatown restaurants are suffering from as much as a 50% decrease in business. Why do they think every Chinese-related place of business can endanger their lives?

They can’t! If you live in Chicago, let’s go get some dim sum! Let’s go buy groceries. Please show your intelligence by heading into Chinatown for excellent food and service. If you don’t live in Chicago, please patronize the closest Chinese businesses to your home. Do it. Now.

Hi, Ann – it was great to meet you, too. American racism against Asians came out very quickly in this situation. Americans tend to forget that there's tremendous racism against Asians that is entrenched in our culture.

I'm doing my part about the coronavirus by washing my hands a lot, sneezing only into my own bandana (or inner elbow) and convincing a sick friend to STAY HOME even though she feels guilty about not going to work.

Hi Regina – Loved meeting you this evening @ the Acrossthetable dinner. The fear and avoidance that the coronavirus is causing to avoid Chinese communities is nonsensical. No doubt this pandemic is a serious matter and everyone should follow CDC guidance to wash hands, cover mouths and stay at home when sick. These actions will keep us all safer, not stigmatizing a single ethnicity. By the way, I am down for Dim Sum…one of my favorite types of food. Thanks for sharing your blog.
