Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) coincides with the spooky month, so here’s a VERY partial list of horror novels written by Latinas/os from across the hemisphere.
Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin (2014): An atmospheric story of what a mother will do to recover her child. Creepy.
Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica (2017): About a man who slaughters at the local meat processing plant. But it’s not THAT kind of meat.
Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor (2017): The village witch is murdered and the discovery of her corpse leads to an investigation. This story is told through a series of unreliable narrators who describe acts of depravity or brutality in this damned Mexican village.
Eartheater by Dolores Reyes (2019): A young woman can’t resist the urge to eat dirt and finds it gives her visions of murdered and missing people. She keeps it a secret until it gets out and desperate members of her community begin asking for help.
Thirst By Marina Yuszczuk (2024) : A vampire flees the dangers of nineteenth century Europe by hibernating in a coffin in Buenos Aires. She emerges in modern day, intermingles with humans, and meets a woman with whom she forms an unusual bond.
The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro (2024): A woman who is a wife and mother is haunted by La Llorona.

I read Tender is the Flesh and I couldn’t put it down! I also read the Haunting of Alejandra and really enjoyed reading that one. Right now I’m reading Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez.
Thanks. I’ll look for that one.
