Chicana on the Edge

Mentioning the unmentionable since 2004

Medium.com Writing Contest

I also publish on a platform called Medium.com. It’s sort of like YouTube, but for writing: anyone big or small can publish and you can make money if you get enough readers.

They ran a contest in July and August (2021) with four categories: death, re-entry, space and work. There will be a winner in each category ($10,000 each), a grand prize winner ($50,000), many other winners of $100 each, and even more runners up whose stories will be featured on the website. And the more eyeballs on our stories, the more we get paid.

I’m telling you so that if, some time in September, I mention that I didn’t place or that I won a hundred bucks or whatever happens, you’ll know what I’m talking about. If you want to take a look at what I produced, links to my entries are below.

If you aren’t a subscriber to Medium, I’m not sure I make money from your eyeballs, but at the end of each story there’s a little hand clapping icon. If you click on it once, I get one clap. If you hold it down you can clap many times (up to fifty claps). If you can clap on any of these stories, I’d appreciate it!

If you want to join Medium, please use my subscriber link.

The regular, non-contest Medium editors already liked three of these pieces enough to choose them for “further distribution” (all except the one I wrote for space). That’s exciting right there!

On death – When Dying Wishes Cause Pain to the Living: How Responsible Are You for Obeying When You’ll Have to Live with the Consequences?

On re-entry – I Didn’t Want to Be THIS Divorced: 55 Years Old and Looking for a Date

On space – Being Old at the Gym Is the Best: Forget “leg day.” Every day is whatever-feels-good day.

On work – Or DON’T Do What You Love: The belief “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” has created a spectrum of hypocrisy.

If you read any of them, thank you. If you also clap on any of them thank you again!

UPDATE on 4 Sept 2021: I was included in this Medium story The Best First Sentences From the Contest Entries! Whoever wrote it (not affiliated with the contest or judging or anything) liked how “I Didn’t Want to Be THIS Divorced” started.

UPDATE on 30 Oct 2021: I didn’t win anything, but it got me writing and earning more on Medium which was worth it.

UPDATE on 6 June 2023: Medium has become suspect to me and I no longer publish there, unless I copy/paste a post from here.
